1974 - I was just 14 and discovered my interest in music. My first favourite group were the Hollies. They sang themselves with The Air That I Breath in my heart. And then over night it happened. Sugar Baby Love hit Nr. 1 from 0, shooting star, as it was called back then. I was very happy, because I liked this song very much. About the band I didn't know anything but that they were called the Rubettes. I have to mention that at the time I lived in the former GDR where we didn't have any access to all the information. All I had was a radio, not even a tape player to record the songs. It was a big event for me to see my favourite group for the first time on TV. I remember exactly, it was in DISCO 74 with Ilja Richter. Well I had imagined them to look a bit different, rather like Sweet or Slade. But at least they were special with their hats, and they still are today.
In 1975 they were even twice in the GDR for the shows RUND and Ein Kessel Buntes. It was a chance to see them live, but unfortunately the tickets for the shows were sold out quickly and for me unreachable. But at least it was possible to get some information and photos of the Rubettes. And a record appeared in the shops. Unfortunately only a very limited edition. Again I wasn't fortunate enough to get one.
In 1976 I got my own tape player and had hence the possibility to cut my own Rubettes tape. Mixed with some interviews it was much better than any record and it was unique. 1977-1978 In the years to come it got more and more quite around my favourite band. I was always on the radio in hope of new songs and to get some information. Also on TV they appeared less and less. 1979 This was the year when I had to say goodbye to them for a long long time. The last song, the last appearance on TV, the programme POP with Volker Lechtenbrink Stay With Me. Afterwards I didn't hear about them any more.
